WHAT IS ROBOTIC JOINT REPLACEMENT?
Robotic knee replacement is an innovative surgical technique that uses a robotic arm to assist the surgeon during joint replacement surgery. At Aadhar, we use the latest Knee surgery Robot from Zimmer Biomet, called ROSA. The first of its kind, ROSA ROBOT does not require the patient to undergo a CT scan before surgery – this saves the patient from not only unnecessary radiation exposure but also saves on the cost of a CT scan.
ROSA ROBOT maps the knee in real-time using high-definition cameras. The robot then makes a 3D model of the patient’s knee (customized to the patient) which allows it to propose a surgery plan that the surgeon verifies. After the surgeon is satisfied with the various data points, he can go ahead with robotic surgery.
This Personalised Alignment Technique allows the surgeon to tailor the knee replacement to within sub-mm and sub-degrees of accuracy (Not achievable by other current conventional techniques) for each and every knee, time after time, without any error and to reproduce original knee anatomy and kinematics.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ROBOTIC AND CONVENTIONAL KNEE REPLACEMENT?
One of the major advantages of robotic surgery versus conventional surgery is that there is no need to insert a rod into the bony canal to take bony landmarks. This is done by the robot itself using preplanned bony landmarks. This step ensures sub-mm and sub-degree level accuracy and that there is no loss of precious bone marrow, and prevents complications such as embolism and post-operative bleeding. It also makes blood transfusions unnecessary, thus eliminating the risks associated with it, including infection and transfusion reactions.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The ROSA robot creates a virtual 3D model of the knee using bony reference points and helps the surgeon plan the entire procedure with a well-balanced knee even before any surgical step is done. Once the surgeon is satisfied with the surgical plan, the robot conducts the surgery in less than 5 minutes and allows the surgeon to verify all cuts with 100% accuracy.
During the procedure, the surgeon controls the TRUE ROBOTIC ARM to make the necessary cuts and remove the damaged joint and replace it with an artificial one. The robotic arm is equipped with advanced sensors and cameras that provide real-time feedback to the surgeon, allowing him to make precise adjustments and ensure accurate placement of the joint implant. The robotic arm makes sure that the cuts are 100% accurate and this is verified intraoperatively by the surgeon using special sensors.
