ENHANCING RADIATION ONCOLOGY SERVICES WITH ADDING BRACHYTHERAPY UNIT

Department of radiation was started in Nov. 2016, one year after the start of the hospital. As a landmark development, AADHAR Hospital started Radiation treatment with the world’s best radiation treatment machine “TRUE BEAM SVC”. Since its inception, we have treated 3849 patients from different regions. Different types of techniques like 3- Dimensional Conformal Radiotherapy (3-DCRT), Intensity Modulated Radiation (IMRT), Image-guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) with onboard robotic CT Scan, Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) and stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT). This machine has the facility of electrons (different energies) and photons (choice of five energies depending upon the patient’s weight). Details of the demographic profile of the patients are as follows.

More than five thousand patients presented to the radiation outpatients department in the last six years. We treated a total of 3849 patients or a total of 76416 Fractions to date by different techniques of radiation. Out of this 2587 were male patients and 1262 were female patients. Cancer is a lifestyle disease and tobacco use is very common among males. This may be the reason for the high prevalence of cancer in males.

Head and neck is the most common cancer which is being treated with radiation therapy accounting for one-third of total patients who presented to the Department of Radiation in the last six years. Carcinoma Breast and carcinoma lung are the second and third most common cancers that were given radiation respectively. This may be again because of high tobacco and alcohol consumption in the society.

Age-wise distribution of these 3840 patients treated in the last six years is as follows. As is evident from the graph, most of the cancer patients i.e. two two-thirds of patients are in the age group of 51 to 70 years. The next most common group is the age group of 41 to 50 years.

Aadhar Hospital provides its services not only to Haryana, district Hisar and adjoining areas but also to adjoining states of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Delhi and a few patients come from UP, Himachal Pradesh etc. District distribution of Haryana state, of the patients receive radiation treatment is depicted in the table and are as follows:
