A PAIN-FREE FUTURE WITH ROSA – ROBOTIC KNEE REPLACEMENT AT AADHAR HEALTH INSTITUTE, HISAR

The knee joint is one of the most complex joints in the human body, responsible for connecting the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia and the fibula and patella (kneecap). This joint is cushioned by smooth, resilient cartilage, which covers the ends of the bones and provides flexibility and nearly frictionless movement.
However, despite the durability of the knee joint, it is still susceptible to injuries and conditions that cause severe pain, making it difficult to perform even the basic activities of daily living. At Aadhar Health Institute, we understand the importance of healthy joints and are the pioneer in providing the latest, cutting-edge treatment for knee pain and arthritis using the first and only knee robot in the region, called ROSA, from world-renowned company Zimmer Biomet combined with the exclusive Persona knee implant using the medial congruent spacer from Zimmer Biomet.

WHAT IS ROBOTIC JOINT REPLACEMENT?
Robotic knee replacement is an innovative surgical technique that uses a robotic arm to assist the surgeon during joint replacement surgery. At Aadhar, we use the latest Knee surgery Robotic arm from Zimmer Biomet, called ROSA. The first of its kind, ROSA ROBOT does not require the patient to undergo a CT scan before surgery – this saves the patient from not only unnecessary radiation exposure but also saves on the cost of a CT scan.

ROSA ROBOT maps the knee in real-time using high-definition cameras. The robot then makes a 3D model of the patient’s knee (customized to the patient) which allows it to propose a surgery plan that the surgeon verifies. After the surgeon is satisfied with the various data points, he can go ahead with robotic surgery.
This Personalised Alignment Technique allows the surgeon to tailor the knee replacement to within sub-mm and sub-degrees of accuracy (Not achievable by other current conventional techniques) for each and every knee, time after time, without any error and to reproduce original knee anatomy and kinematics.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ROBOTIC AND CONVENTIONAL KNEE REPLACEMENT?
One of the major advantages of robotic surgery versus conventional surgery is that there is no need to insert a rod into the bony canal. This is done by the robot itself using preplanned bony landmarks. This step ensures sub-mm and sub-degree level accuracy and that there is no loss of precious bone marrow, and prevents complications such as embolism and post-operative bleeding. It also makes blood transfusions unnecessary, thus eliminating the risks associated with it, including infection and transfusion reactions.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
The ROSA robot creates a virtual 3D model of the knee using bony reference points and helps the surgeon plan the entire procedure with a well-balanced knee even before any surgical step is done. Once the surgeon is satisfied with the surgical plan, the robot conducts the surgery in less than 5 minutes and allows the surgeon to verify all cuts with 100% accuracy.
During the procedure, the surgeon controls the TRUE ROBOTIC ARM to make the necessary cuts and remove the damaged joint and replace it with an artificial one. The robotic arm is equipped with advanced sensors and cameras that provide real-time feedback to the surgeon, allowing them to make precise adjustments and ensure accurate placement of the joint implant. The robotic arm makes sure that the cuts are 100% accurate and this is verified intra operatively by the surgeon using special sensors.
During robotic orthopedic surgery, the robotic arm guides the surgical tools with incredible accuracy resulting in a less invasive procedure and less damage to surrounding tissue.

THE BENEFITS OF ROBOTIC JOINT REPLACEMENT USING ROSA ROBOT

THE LATEST ADVANCEMENT IN KNEE REPLACEMENT- AND FIRST IN THE REGION

  • There are many benefits to choosing Robotic Knee Replacement at AADHAR HEALTH INSTITUTE, including:
NO CT SCAN OR MRI NEEDED: The patient does not need to undergo any pre-operative CT Scans or MRI scans before the surgery. Using highly accurate and advanced hi-definition cameras and software, the ROSA Robotic System maps the knee in real-time in the Operation Room and creates a robotic knee replacement plan.
TRUE ROBOTIC ARM: The ROSA robot from Zimmer Biomet is equipped with a true robotic arm which is placed next to the OT Table. The robotic arm extends into the joint and executes the surgery under the full control of the surgeon.
  • PRECISION AND ACCURACY: ROSA robotic system allows for unparalleled precision and accuracy, resulting in a better fit and alignment of the replacement joint.
MINIMAL INVASIVE AND LESS BLOOD LOSS: Robotic knee surgery is a minimally invasive procedure, which means less scarring, less pain, less blood loss, and a faster recovery time.
  • REDUCED COMPLICATIONS: The accuracy of our robotic system reduces the risk of complications such as blood loss, implant loosening, and failure.
  • PERSONALISED TREATMENT: Our robotic system allows for a personalized surgical plan (kinematic alignment), ensuring that your replacement joint is positioned precisely where it needs to be.
  • NO BONE-MARROW BLEED / BONE MARROW VIOLATION: As the robot makes a 3D surface map of the knee and plans the entire surgery with inputs from the surgeon in real-time, it does not need an intramedullary alignment rod. Since the bony canal is not violated, it not only prevents loss of the important bone marrow but also decreases the risk of complications like pulmonary embolism and fat embolism.
  • FASTER RECOVERY: With less invasive surgery and less damage to surrounding tissue, recovery times are typically faster than traditional joint replacement surgery

FAQS

HOW IS ROBOTIC JOINT REPLACEMENT DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY?

Robotic joint replacement uses a highly advanced robotic arm to guide the surgeon during the procedure. This precision technology enables the surgeon to make more accurate cuts and place the implant with greater precision, resulting in a better outcome for the patient.

IS ROBOTIC JOINT REPLACEMENT SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE?

Any patient who is suitable for a knee replacement procedure is also a candidate for robotic knee replacement.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?

The duration of the procedure can vary depending on several factors, such as the type of joint being replaced and the complexity of the surgery. However, most robotic joint replacement procedures take approximately 40 minutes to 1 hour.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME FOR ROBOTIC JOINT REPLACEMENT?

The patient is allowed to move his/her knee and walk at full weight the very same day after surgery. Accelerated recovery is possible due to minimally invasive surgery possible with robotic technology. Recovery time for robotic joint replacement varies from patient to patient however most patients can expect to return to normal activities within a few weeks following the surgery at an accelerated pace.

WILL I EXPERIENCE PAIN DURING AND AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

Robotic knee replacement is essentially a painless procedure. You will be under anesthesia during the procedure, so you should not feel any pain. You may experience some discomfort after the surgery, for which we provide you with a novel patient-controlled analgesia technique exclusive to us, allowing for superior pain control leading to faster recovery and a comfortable and shorter hospital stay. If you are considering knee replacement for yourself or one of your family members, it is advisable to talk to your orthopedic surgeon about the benefits of robotic knee replacement.
